When your H1 is ready to be approved, just go back to Canada, get it stamped and enter US using your H1 visa (I-94 should have H-1 stamp)...Thats it, then you are all set...Even after entering on AP, you can continue to work on H-1 if you are still working for the same employer....No need to re-start/re-apply anything...Your EAD/AP will all be still valid but you will be in H-1 status...You can just keep renewing them...The only thing is when you get married and bring your spouse on H-4, you wont be able to file for her 485/EAD/AP till your PD is current again...

I am now worried that eventually we will all get the GC and then we will sit out for 5-7 years and get a citizenship... Then make a trip to india only to realize that the the world has shifted.
Then it is all back to square 1, H1, GC, citizenship in India.... :D

I work with corporate lawyers everyday, and yes they are very smart. However, immigration lawyers are the bottom of the barrel.
I have nothing against lawyers, most are hard-working and smart. But that smartness also makes them confuse others and ultimately its the clients who have to pay for the smartness of the lawyers.
I am totally against that.
making a living is one thing, but talk about confusing people and milking them for the money !!!

I would like to request your assistance with a pending petition with USCIS that has seen an undue delay in processing. This I 485 petition (Application to Adjust to Permanent Resident Status) and has been pending at the Texas Service Center since it was received. The receipt date is June 15, 2007 which is prior to what is currently listed as the processing date on the USCIS website (current processing date listed as of September 30, 2008 is June 27, 2007. USCIS has not updated the processing dates after September 30, 2008 on their website).
My Priority date of August 9th, 2001 is current for my case category EB3 India. I have requested a status update from the USCIS service center and 2 service requests were started on my behalf but I have not heard anything or seen any progress on my case.

EB2 India will move very fast till 01 JAN 06 as because based on June 2007 bulletin, just before the july fiasco,( http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/bulletin/bulletin_3236.html ) the PD for China is 01 JAN 06. That means in EB2 Category except India and China every other country is current. So till India reaches 01 JAN 06 PD in EB2, all the spill overs will be moved to EB2 India. By the time India EB2 reaches 01 JAN 06, China PD in EB2 will move further from 01 JAN 06 by using its 7% quota. So Inidia PD for EB2 again moves fast till that changed China PD using the spill overs. After that India and China will share the spill overs based on the PD priority. All this happens if and only if the USCIS works effectively and uses all the available visa numbers for the present fiscal year. My prediction for EB2 India PD is it touch 2005 /even cross few months in 2005 by the end of this year if USCIS works effectively.

This is horrible and some community organizations and law firms must talk to the DOS/Whitehouse about this issue. National Security is must but there must be better way than playing with the future of so many innocent people (99% most likely of which will have acceptable backgrounds).
You must have already done some of this - try to contact your local Congressman, Attorney, Employer and try to find more info. This is completely unacceptable. After the PIMS introduction, I am hearing a lot of horror stories. It never used to be so bad earlier.
How can the consulate keep passports for so long? Basically, they are even barring you from taking any journey anywhere abroad. Why?
National security and background checks are a must but with someone who has been in US for 5+ years (or for that matter even once) should already have been verified.
I am assuming you do not have AP or do not want to use it...otherwise you can ask for your passports, abandon the visa application and enter US using AP. Talk to your attorney if you try this..
